THE KAMIKAZE

The easy-to-make shooter that marked my disco years in my early twenties – not one of my prouder moments… The sound of the cocktail shaker seemed to work like a dog whistle with all of us. Shots would line up, we would duck down, toast a quick “Cheers!”, throw back the liquid treat and get back on the dance floor in no time!


The roots

Born in the 1970s during the days of disco, the Kamikaze is a shaken cocktail that became more famous, though, as a shooter that’s perfect for knocking back quickly and getting the party started.

It’s a senseless, infuriating concoction made of equal parts vodka, lime juice, and triple sec…There are no standards for the kamikaze. It has no particular attributes that would distinguish a good kamikaze from a bad one.

A Kamikaze is usually served in a small rocks glass or cocktail glass without ice. No garnish is needed.

If you take the Kamikaze cocktail and shrink it down to a shot glass, then you have the fun party shooter.  It has a tart taste and will take you back a bit, but it is certainly not one of the worst shooters you will come across. Actually it is pretty good and it is so simple to make that you can shake up an entire round in no time.

Don’t do too many, or you’ll figure out why it’s called a kamikaze when you start slamming yourself into things around you…

1 part vodka
1 part triple sec
1 part lime juice

The drill

Add all the ingredients to a shaker and fill with ice

Shake, and strain into a chilled cocktail glass or divide between shot glasses
